Life Lessons that Don't Work

You know that saying "It's better to give than to receive"?  Great in theory; great for adults; great for people with the intellectual capacity to understand generosity and its importance... but try explaining this concept to a 2 year old who is picking out a gift for a friend's birthday party.

Doesn't quite resonate.

The journey started out pretty well.  I told Niall that we were going to pick out a present for Jack, to which Niall immediately replied "TWUCK!"  And I encouraged his enthusiasm for Jack's special day by saying "What a great idea- we'll get him a truck... you can pick it out!"  This was very exciting to him.

But not quite as exciting as seeing this guy as we were walking down the steps:

Looks like he may be in need of a diaper change there- don't judge me ;)
Anyway, back to the task at hand... getting Jack's present.  When we got to the toy store, Niall tested out a variety of trucks and cars before deciding which one would be good enough to serve as Jack's special birthday present.  I was careful to keep reminding Niall that this was Jack's present-- "Which present do you think Jack would like the most?"

And he was pretty much on board.  He kept repeating "Jack's twuck!"  What a great job Niall did, I thought.

Until we got home.  Which was when Niall wanted to take Jack's truck out of the box and play with it.  It's pretty much pure torture for this awesome fire truck to be sitting in front of him all night and he can't play with it.

So I decided to wrap it up and tell Niall that Jack would open it tomorrow.  Which was even more torture.  Now the fire truck that he couldn't take out of the box was covered in paper so that he couldn't even look at it.  Good one, mommy.

Not a pretty evening.  Am I going to go through this every time we have to go to a birthday party??

An Early Morning

What do you do when your kid wakes up at 5am and won't go back to sleep?  In this family, you throw a hoodie on, do a quick diaper change, and follow daddy to the mom-n-pop donut shop for a pre-workday breakfast, and then scoot on down to the train station (minus daddy).

But sometimes, that train never comes...

What could be worse for a young boy?  Nothing.  We waited for 45 minutes for the freight train to zoom past with that exhilarating "wooosh," only to hear crickets.

We couldn't even see the sunrise- just a pretty, reddish colored sky.  So after pacing the platform about 127 times, I made the executive decision that it was time to go.  Niall fought me tooth and nail (why he was still interested in standing there at the empty station is beyond me), but I scooped him up and took him to the car.

I strapped him into the car seat against his will and explained that the choo choo just wasn't coming today.  I promised we'd come back again as we drove away.  And just then, in the distance, as we were about a mile down the road, we heard it...

CHOOOO CHOOOOO!!!!

I felt terrible.  I truly had a knot in my stomach.  I looked in the rear view mirror and saw his face, completely let down and confused.  "Choo Choo??", he sighed, with those concerned, confused furrowed eyebrows.  I was speechless.  How could I have done this to him?  How could the stupid train have done this to me??

I just repeated "I'm so sorry, Niall.  I'm so sorry" over and over.  It was the first time I can remember being at a total loss for words in a while.  Needless to say, we'll have to make a trip back to the station very soon, or I will be in the dog house for quite some time.

3 years

Bad wife here.  I did a post yesterday about our little kid's trip to the farm, but what I should have posted was that it was Matt's and my third wedding anniversary.  Woops, we'll blame it on pregnant brain freeze.

Matt and I have come a long way since that September day-- we had a year to ourselves, then came Niall, and now another on the way.  It all seems like a blur, but I"ll never forget how much fun that day was.  Everything was just perfect- the weather, a sail boat ride into the reception, and lots and lots of dancing...

I'm so blessed to have this little family with Matt, Niall and baby-to-be.  I couldn't ask for more :)

Apples, Cows & Goats, Oh My!

I feel really lucky to be able to stay home with Niall, so I try to put my all into filling every day with fun and learning for him. But some days, I wish I had it in me to say "No, there's just too much going on today. We can't do it all." I don't think I have that ability in my genetic makeup.

So despite our growing colds, my midwife appointment, work, and a desperate need to visit the grocery store, we trekked out to a farm/apple orchard almost an hour away.

I joined this mom's club in my area to make some new friends and have more to do with Niall-- and it's been the best thing I've ever signed up for. They do so much great stuff and they're all really down to earth and fun to be around. So how could I bail on the first fall trip to an apple picking farm with a hayride in the deal?

This is what I look like after catching a cold and getting 4 hours of sleep.
Yes, sometimes you need to learn to say no. Sometimes, you need to give yourself credit for getting all the other things on the to-do list done and call it a day. Sometimes, you need to realize that your kid is not going to fall behind just because he didn't "socialize" with another 2 year old one day out of the week. But then you'd miss out on things like this:

Really, Niall?  Is that all it takes to get you to eat a fruit or vegetable?  We just have to drive an hour into the boonies every day so you can pick it yourself?  Consider it done ;)

Niall loved running up to the rotten apples on the ground that were being ambushed by flies and bees, yelling "YUCK!!!"... and then picking them up and throwing them at me.

But the best was feeding the goats.  They would peep their little heads through the fence as far as they could and gobble the pellets right out of Niall's hand like they've never eaten a day in their lives.  It felt funny because they don't really have teeth, so it's mostly lips and tongue just inhaling your hand.  Niall got a big kick out of it.

And he was sure to blow a big kiss to the baby calf when we had to leave.

Fall is Here

Today was officially the first day of fall.  I'm not sure when it technically begins on the calendar, but for me, it's that first time you wake up with a little chill and feel the urge to put your socks on as soon as you get out of bed.  It's the first day you can turn off your AC for good, knowing that it's not just a fluke day, and open all the windows.

Many people will be letting out a sigh of yearning for the summer to extend just a little further, but I will be basking in delight, knowing that there are no more 90 degree days in my near future and that there will be a good solid month and a half of my favorite weather before it turns into those winter gloomy days.

There are so many things to love about fall... the leaves changing, the ability to be comfortable (a pair of jeans and 3/4 sleeve shirt will suffice for a while), hay rides, pumpkin picking, open windows and apple cider.  But sadly enough, when you ask me my favorite thing about fall, I will not mention those things.  It will be this:

Pathetic.  My absolute favorite thing about fall is the pumpkin spice latte.  And I just have to learn to accept that.  It's what makes me happy and there's nothing I can do to change that sad fact ;)

HAPPY FALL!

The Fire House

I can still vividly remember that feeling of awe when I reached out and touched Cinderella on my first trip to Disney World-- when she gave me a big hug and posed in a picture with me, it all felt like a dream.  So I know how Niall must have felt yesterday we parked the car and walked around the corner to this:

Every time we drive past the station (almost every time we go for a drive), he shouts out "Fire Truck!" (or more phonetically accurate: "Wire Twuck!") several blocks before we can even see them.  He just knows they're there.  And it makes him very excited.

So we were lucky enough to get a tour yesterday, thanks to one of the ladies from my mom's group, and got the group of five energetic, not-quite-2-year-olds into the station.  I think the fireman was a little more used to a slightly more mature group of tots (maybe 5 and 6 year olds) who care about things like where the firemen eat, play pool, and watch TV.

These kids could not have been more clear about how they felt about the firehouse tour: "TWUCKS!!!!" Translation: We don't care about your stupid recreational space, just show us the big red engines!!  NOW!!!

So the very understanding fireman led us quickly out to the garage, where the real action was.

I was shocked that Niall didn't take up the offer to climb into the driver's seat, but he did hop in the back.  I think it was a little bit intimidating.

He didn't take his souvenir fireman's hat off for the rest of the day... and then proceeded to ask for it promptly at 6am this morning when he woke up ;)
